How is the score calculated?

From 8 rules: title length, target keyword inside the first 40 characters, use of the 13 tag slots, tag validity, long-tail tag share, tags that merely repeat the title, description length, and tag coverage inside the description. Every rule shows its points, the raw value it measured, and its basis (Etsy limit / best practice / measurement). No language model hands out the score.

Are the tag suggestions based on search volume?

No — Etsy does NOT publish search volume, so none is shown here. Suggestions come from COUNTING the tags of 50 competing listings for the same product; each tag shows how many listings use it, with the denominator.

How many tags should I use?

Use all 13; Etsy accepts no more and caps each tag at 20 characters. A duplicate tag counts as a single slot — the tool warns about that separately. The title is capped at 140 characters and the description at 4,000.
