The Product Research Framework

Good product research answers 4 questions:

  1. Is there demand? (search volume)
  2. Can you compete? (competition level)
  3. Will you make money? (margin math)
  4. Is it sustainable? (trend direction)

Step 1: Demand Validation

A product needs at least 300–500 monthly searches on its primary keyword. Anything below 100/month is too thin unless you're targeting a very narrow niche with premium pricing.

In Seller Niche Product Research:

  • Enter a keyword or ASIN
  • See estimated monthly search volume and sales
  • Filter by niche score (combination of demand vs competition)

The 1,000/month rule: If the top 3 sellers in a niche each sell fewer than 1,000 units/month, there's not enough pie for a new entrant to grow without cannibalizing the whole market.

Step 2: Competition Scoring

Look at the top 10 ASINs for your target keyword. Calculate:

  • Average review count — <100 reviews = low barrier, >500 = high barrier
  • BSR (Best Seller Rank) — lower BSR = better-selling. For competitive analysis, a BSR under 20,000 in a main category usually means 300+ sales/month
  • Price range — are the top sellers clustered in a price range you can match?
  • Listing quality — poor photos and thin bullet points = exploitable weakness

Step 3: Margin Math

Before going further, calculate your estimated margin using the Seller Niche P&L calculator:

  • Estimated COGS (use Alibaba as a benchmark)
  • Amazon referral fee for the category
  • FBA fulfillment fee for the estimated size
  • Estimated PPC budget (typically 20–30% of revenue for new products)

Minimum viable margin: 15% net after all costs including PPC. Below 15%, any cost increase or ranking drop makes the product unprofitable.

Step 4: Trend Direction

A product in declining demand is a bad launch even if current numbers look good. Check:

  • 12-month keyword trend (seasonal vs declining vs growing)
  • Google Trends for the broader category

Growth segments in 2025:

  • Health monitoring devices (non-wearable)
  • Sustainable/eco-friendly home products
  • Pet health and nutrition
  • Organization and storage systems
  • Outdoor/adventure accessories

Step 5: Niche Score (Seller Niche)

The Niche Score combines demand, competition and margin into a single 0–100 score. Score above 65 = viable niche. Below 40 = red flags. Between 40–65 = proceed with caution and differentiation plan.

What Makes a Winning Product?

The best FBA products in 2025 share these traits:

  • Can be differentiated visually (packaging, color, design)
  • Not dominated by a single brand with 5,000+ reviews
  • Not electronics (high return rate, fast obsolescence)
  • Reorderable by the same buyer (consumables, replacement parts)
  • Lightweight and small (low FBA fees, easy import)
